Plant Type: Indoor Houseplant

Water Requirement: Very little water is required. These drought-resistant plants grow best in hot, dry areas and excessive water could cause them to rot. Water regularly but allow soil to dry out before watering again. During the winter months, water only enough to keep the leaves from shriveling.

Fertilizer Requirement: Feed monthly with a half-strength of a liquid fertilizer during the growing season. No fertilizer is needed late in fall and winter.

Container Size: 1″ starter plant, *Terra Cotta pot in photo display sold separately

Plant Growth: Upright, blade-like.

Plant Color: Green.

Suggested Uses: Indoor containers and succulent arrangements.

USDA Hardiness Zone: Find Your Zone
9, 10, 11, 12

Special Characteristics:

  • Aloe leaves contain a clear gel that’s a popular home remedy. According to the Mayo Clinic, this substance may shorten the healing of first- and second-degree burns and promote wound healing.
  • Plant in a terra cotta pot with well-drained soil.
  • Aloe plants also produce new, smaller “babies” perfect for propagation. Detach them from the mother plant by severing it with a clean knife. Take care not to break the roots as you do this. Set it on a clean, dry shelf to let it callous over for a couple of days. Then repot it in a small pot.
  • When in doubt, water less, not more. When aloe is overwatered, the roots begin to rot, and the plant eventually dies. It’s better to wait a few extra days if you’re not sure whether it’s time to water.
  • Skill Level: Beginner

Vanilla Bean Orchid

1" STARTER PLANT *Terracotta pot in photo sold separately. Everyone knows the scent and taste of vanilla. But did you know that all vanilla comes from the fruit of an orchid? Of the tens of thousands of orchids known to the world, Vanilla planifolia is the only orchid to produce an edible fruit and what an amazing fruit that has turned out to be… For 300 years, no one was able to get the orchids to bear fruit. Then, in 1836, it was discovered that a miniscule bee (the Melipone) was the sole pollinator of the vanilla orchid. Outside of their native habitat of Mexico, vanilla plant flowers must be hand-pollinated in order to produce the fruit. This means all the vanilla coming from other countries is hand pollinated. You can understand why vanilla is the most expensive spice after saffron!
