  • The only edible produced by the family Orchidaceae. It’s amazing that the secrets of the pods from the genus Vanilla planifolia were ever discovered, as the fresh pods bear no flavor
  • The blooms appear on flowering spikes over a period of weeks, usually, one at a time and each flower last only one day. To produce vanilla beans, the flowers need to be hand pollinated, which is easily done with a toothpick or bamboo skewer.
  • Keep indoor temperatures at least 60 F
  • Non-toxic to pets
  • Trellis will be necessary as vine grows and ages

Mimi, the Mimosa pudica (Sensitive Plant)

1" STARTER PLANT *Terracotta pot in photo sold separately. Meet Mimi. She has a reputation for quickly closing her leaves and looking wilted. Her tendency towards sensitivity just means she feels sensations and emotions more deeply than others. But don't worry, she just needs some "me time" and she'll open up and be back at the party. She's a great friend for kids, helping them develop an interest in plants, and delightful for adults too! Her occasional flowers are pink puffballs right out of a storybook. Mimi enjoys a room with bright indirect light and an even touch with the water (she's not a fan of soggy roots).

Aloe Vera

1" STARTER PLANT *Terracotta pot in photo sold separately. Aloe vera is grown for its succulent leaves which have a variety of culinary and medicinal uses. The leaves contain a clear gel that's a popular home remedy. According to the Mayo Clinic, this substance may shorten the healing of first- and second-degree burns and promote wound healing. Perennial in zones 9+, aloe is typically grown as a houseplant since it won't overwinter in cooler climates. Very little water is required. These drought-resistant plants grow best in hot, dry areas and excessive water could cause them to rot. Water regularly but allow soil to dry out before watering again. During the winter months, water only enough to keep the leaves from shriveling.

Effie, the Fittonia argyroneura (Nerve Plant)

1" STARTER PLANT *Terracotta pot in photo sold separately. Meet Effie. Her nerves are on display but in the vein of pluckiness rather than timidity. She loves a good tromp though humid climes and will always appreciate the gift of a humidity tray or regular misting. She even encourages you to create a tiny terrarium adventure for her, as it's one of her favorite habitats! Not a desert gal, Effie prefers filtered gentle light and will get a sunburn in direct sunlight.
