Corn gluten meal (CGM), the protein by-product of corn milling, is a high (10%) nitrogen, natural compound with documented success in reducing germination of many species of weed seed. A preemergent herbicide, CGM inhibits root development during seed germination by desiccating the soil and reducing water uptake. This is most effective in the early spring when the weeds have not sprouted. You should not seed your lawn while using this product, and if there is excessive rainfall you may need to re-apply. It is also a way to fertilize your lawn.
The CGM products we carry:
Espoma-Organic Weed Preventer, a smaller bag which covers up to 300 Sq. Ft.
Concern-All Natural Weed Prevention Plus, NPK of 8-2-4 in a 25 lb. bag which covers 1500 Sq. Ft.

Note the NPK on some of the products. N stands for Nitrogen. Nitrogen helps make plants greener and helps them grow faster. Nitrogen can be depleted over time by plants and by being washed away. P stands for Phosphorus. Phosphorous is good for root growth, disease resistance, seed and fruit growth, and for blooming and flowering. K stands for Potassium. Potassium or Potash can help with increasing root growth, with drought resistance, and with disease resistance. It is important for overall plant health. You will find these numbers on all fertilizer products.

A surfactant is a mishmash of the term “surface active agent,” which is an organic compound that is soluble in chemical solutions or water and allows mixtures to blend, adhere and work better. They serve as an enhancement and help to break the barrier of hard-to-penetrate surfaces, like the waxy surface of a leaf. You may have heard of the following popular products;
